One or more items ?

[edit]

Work with WD force us to think in different way in order to structure the information in the correct form. Certainly, the open structure of properties and qualifiers of WD allows to make wider combinations that sometimes gather unusual characteristics within an item, but we do have to apply a reasonable limit, to avoid create useless "Frankenstein items".

To understand what must be the best structure for any topic, I try to look it in its environment, its relationships and, specially, its rol within an structure (for instance, the sport clubs play sports or the sports have clubs ? ). Answer is not always easy and needs many discussions to have an agreement among the comunity.

After seeing the samples of power plants, we may ask whether we need an specific item for the plant, besides the item for facility and another for the dam.

Next table summarize the different "thematc blocks" and topics we show informations for each type of plant. The empty spaces correspond to non applicable, non remarkable or non documented information.

Theme Topic Thermal Nuclear Hydro (ca) Tidal Geothermal Solar Wave Wind

others (water, steam recovery,..) x x
Legend Energy related characteristics. Low amount of information, specially in clean energies plants.
Buildings and facilities. Generators and its technology, sometimes, are intrinsically related with the building
The only significant facilities to stock raw material are reservoir, which also represent a remarkable point in territory.
Conclusions

From amadalvarez:

  • reservoir (Q131681) is, in terms of energy, "the raw material warehouse". In no other power plant the warehouse has significance. In the wind, solar or wave class it's obvious. But in hydroelectrical and in tidal plant with barrage the reservoir is an important point in the territory with other uses as irrigation or sports, and usually it has their own item. Therefore, the question is select correctly which properties belongs to reservoir and which belongs to the dam (Q12323), what, usually host the power plant.
  • As any other activity, power plants are in a territory location. Even if it was inside a building, in a dam or in any other facility, most of the properties are commons to any other facility, as a factory, a museum, or a theater. All of these cases share information about geography, construction, dimensions, building history that sometime can change its activity, etc. In addition, they have specific data of its function that are linked with the building. In the case of power plants are really just a little information exclusively related with power produced.
Probably the most voluminous and important collection are those related with the generator equipment that, in fact, are part of the facility itself. On the other hand, if we had one item for power plant separate from building, will it have coordinates, address, etc ?. And what would be the meaning of the building item without activity ?.

Therefore, I suggest having just one item for the power plant including info of the building or any other kind of facility (dam included) and the information about power generation, all together. Amadalvarez (talk) 17:02, 30 July 2019 (UTC)

Analysis of ontology proposed on en:Template:Infobox_power_station for all kind of power station, except the hydroelectric plants.

  • The inventory of blocks to be treated and the info to consider seems accurate i rigorous.
  • The solution to manage the power production elements (generators, turbines, solar collectors, etc.) is good oriented to hold future typologies of power production.
  • The inventory of commons properties related with localization, owner, manager, geography aspects, etc. are correct.

In order to analyze the specific properties proposed to handle the information, we present a summary organized by topics or blocks of information. It allows us to compare, at a glance, the different sways to manage similar concepts among each kind of power plant.

  • Type of plant: The P31usually describes the "type of" the item is. In our case, it fits in most of the cases. However, thermal plants, includes, too, the used fuel and, in geothermal, the class of technology.
  • Type of equipment technology: Here, we have a mix among: "number of equipment" (under P527); kind of technology (as P527 in solar, tidal, wave). Considerations: A)The amount of equipment should be stored with P1114 under P2670 and only when they don't appear also in the generators section. B) P527 is intended to describe the complementary parts in which some unit is divided. To describe just one of the elements that contains important characteristics for our description, it's better to use P1552, P2283 or the generic P2670
